Geography major shines in the medical school

Evan de Joya, our alumnus, and a second-year medical student at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently co-published a paper as lead author on Usher Syndrome in the Inner Ear. Being the author of scientific publications is not something new to Evan. As a Geography major, Evan was a very active member of Dr. Moise’s Geography and Inequalities Lab, gained international experience by participating in field research in Zambia. The result has been three co-published peer-reviewed papers, a book chapter and presentations at national and international conferences. Besides being an accomplished researcher, Evan was president of UM student government (2018-2019), and geography student ambassador for the Africa Specialty Group (2017-2019). Evan’s trajectory shows that Geography and Sustainable Development is an excellent first and second major to students interested in attending medical school or public health programs.
