B.A. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS FOR GEOGRAPHY

The following are requirements for the single major in geography:

  1. A minimum of 30 credits (12 in geography courses)
  2. One of the following three courses:
    1. Digital Earth (GEG 101)
    2. World Regional Geography (GEG 105)
    3. Introduction to Human Geography (GEG 110)
  3. Physical Geography (GEG 120)
  4. Geographic Research Methods (GEG 306)
  5. Capstone Research Seminar (GEG 501)

 

B.S. MAJOR REQUIREMENTS FOR GEOGRAPHY

The following are requirements for the single major in geography:

  1. A minimum of 33 credits (27 in geography courses)
  2. One of the following three courses:
    1. Digital Earth (GEG 101)
    2. World Regional Geography (GEG 105)
    3. Introduction to Human Geography (GEG 110)
  3. Physical Geography (GEG 120)
  4. Spatial Data Analysis I (GEG 305) or equivalent
  5. Geographic Research Methods (GEG 306)
  6. Geographic Information Systems I (GEG 310)
  7. Remote Sensing of the Environment (GEG 321)
  8. Geographic Information Systems II (GEG 410)
  9. Capstone Research Seminar (GEG 501)
  10. At least one advanced techniques course from:
    1. Spatial Data Analysis II (GEG 405)
    2. GIS for Health & Environment (GEG 412)
    3. Crime Mapping & Analysis (GEG 414)
    4. Web GIS (GEG 415)
    5. Advanced Topics in Geography (GEG 590)
    6. Internship (GEG 597)
    7. Other advanced technical courses (with departmental approval)

MINOR REQUIREMENTS FOR GEOGRAPHY

The following are requirements for the minor in geography:

  1. A minimum of 15 credits (15 in geography courses)
  2. One of the following four courses:
    1. Digital Earth (GEG 101)
    2. World Regional Geography (GEG 105)
    3. Introduction to Human Geography (GEG 110)
    4. Physical Geography (GEG 120)
  3. At least 2 courses (minimum 6 credits total) at the 300-level or higher

MINOR IN GEOSPATIAL TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS FOR GEOGRAPHY

The following are requirements for the minor in geospatial technology:

  1. A minimum of 18 credits (15 in geography courses)
  2. One of the following four courses:
    1. Digital Earth (GEG 101)
    2. World Regional Geography (GEG 105)
    3. Introduction to Human Geography (GEG 110)
    4. Physical Geography (GEG 120)
  3. Geographic Information Systems I (GEG 310)
  4. Remote Sensing of the Environment (GEG 321)
  5. Geographic Information Systems II (GEG 410)
  6. At least one course from:
    1. Spatial Data Analysis I (GEG 305) or equivalent
    2. Digital Cartography (GEG 315)
    3. GIS for Health & Environment (GEG 412)
    4. Crime Mapping & Analysis (GEG 414)
    5. Web GIS (GEG 415)

POLICIES

INTERNSHIP CREDIT

Students are encouraged to find a suitable internship experience with the Career Planning and Placement Center. Upon approval, 3 to 4 credits may be earned with an internship. These credits will be counted toward the fulfillment of major requirements (GEG 535).

HONORS THESIS

Students with an appropriate GPA are encouraged to write an honors thesis in order to graduate Magna (minimum 3.75 GPA) or Summa Cum Laude (minimum 3.90 GPA). Six credits toward the major may be earned with the honors thesis.

OVERLAPPING COURSES AMONG DUAL MAJORS

Of the coursework at the 200-level or higher in Geography and Regional Studies, no more than 6 credits may double count towards the other major.

STUDY ABROAD

Majors are strongly encouraged to study abroad for a summer, a semester, or an entire year. Study abroad at carefully selected institutions will complement the student's curriculum and area of specialization, will enhance fluency in the foreign language, and will result in heightened affinity for a foreign culture. The study abroad experience need not result in credit overloads or extended time spent in the program.

ACADEMIC STANDING

Only courses in which the grade of C- or better is attained may be counted towards the major or minor, and students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher in all required courses.
