The M.A. in Geography prepares students for positions in government, non-governmental organizations, and business. The program was carefully designed to serve domestic and international students who have at least one of the following goals:

Qualifying for jobs in the private or government sector that require greater expertise in geographical tools than is provided by an undergraduate degree.
Obtaining the background in geography and geospatial technology required to gain admission to a high-quality geography or multidisciplinary doctoral program.
Studying geography to complement another area of expertise (law, political science, public health, statistics, energy, marketing, sociology, finance, business, etc.).

The program focuses on three thematic areas (development studies, environmental analysis, and globalization and urban change) or the interactions between them.

During the program, students develop a solid conceptual and theoretical background in geography and sustainable development, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work effectively in multi-cultural environments and collaborative settings.

Optionally, students can take courses in geospatial technology and learn marketable skills for today's job market: Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital cartography, satellite remote sensing, land use and land cover analysis, survey research, and spatial statistics.

Our students enjoy living in Miami, a vibrant international city that offers unique opportunities for applied geographical research. In addition to their access to outstanding instructors and mentors, students increase their personal networks by participating of enrichment activities offered by the UM Graduate School on our beautiful campus in Coral Gables.
