Cognates

All undergraduate students must complete at least one cognate in one of the three Areas of Knowledge that compose UM’s framework for General Education: People & Society, Arts & Humanities, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

The Geography and Sustainable Development major or minor fulfills the People and Society cognate requirement. Therefore, they are great options for students majoring in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering.

The Geospatial Technology minor fulfills the STEM cognate requirement, and therefore is a great skill-building option for social science and humanities students.

In addition to our majors and minors, the Department of Geography and Sustainable Development manages five related cognates:

Geospatial Technology

Global Urbanization

Sustainable Cities

Health & Medicine in the Social Sciences

Middle East Politics
